About the Mississippi Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA MS)
The Mississippi chapter of the American Institute of Architects is hiring its next Executive Director. Since 1929 AIA MS has been serving the professional needs of architects in our design community, which currently includes more than 300 members. AIA MS is a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization.
AIA MS advocates for the value of architecture and give architects the resources they need to do their best work. Our programs drive positive change through the power of design. AIA MS programming includes Convention, Mississippi Celebrates Architecture, legislative advocacy, AIA Movie Nights and PechaKucha, continuing education, support to emerging professionals and young architects and many others.
About the Executive Director Position
The Executive Director will Report to the AIA MS Board President, and Executive Committee. The Executive Director is responsible for the effective leadership, management and financial health of AIA MS. The Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational day to day responsibility for AIA MS’s staff, programs and execution of its mission, as directed by its officers, and members of the board.
S/he will assist the AIA MS Executive Committee, and the Board develop and enact core programs, operations, and business plans.
Leadership & Management:
Ensure ongoing statewide AIA MS programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
Actively engage and energize AIA MS volunteers, board members, chapter committees, in partnering with other organizations, and AIA MS MAPP Partners.
Support the AIA MS board of directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing AIA MS operations as well as for AIA National initiatives.
Lead, the AIA MS Board to develop, effective systems to track progress, and evaluate programs to maximize benefits of such programs, events and public outreach opportunities.
Direct knowledge of and experience in all legal obligations and tax reporting responsibilities at the federal, state and local levels of a 501C-6 professional trade association.
Communicate with AIA National, report chapter activities and keep Chapter informed and up to date with AIA National standards and practices.
Membership Relations and Development:
Be a welcoming, encouraging and nurturing presence for all AIA MS members, seeking ways for each of them to engage in chapter activities.
Cultivate, recruit, and engage potential members, including students, architects new to Mississippi and architects not currently members of AIA MS.
Communicate the value of AIA MS membership to current and potential members.
Non-Dues Revenue & Communications:
Expand non-dues revenue generating and fundraising activities to support all existing and future programming. AIA MS has an active partnership with construction industry businesses though our Mississippi Allied Partners Program (MAPP). This program is an important source of revenue and a conduit for communication and outreach in the building industry.
Deepen, refine and help maintain all aspects of communications—from web presence to external social media with the goal of creating and expanding a stronger public presence platform for AIA MS.
Raise the profile of AIA MS by actively and effectively representing the organization to members, funders, community leaders and the community at large and overseeing sound marketing strategies.
Create promotional materials for various AIA MS events.
Develop and issue standard member content in timely, appropriate and accurate manner.
Budget and Finance:
Ensure AIA MS applies sound financial and administrative practice through effective fiscal management.
Work with AIA MS’s Executive Committee in preparing a budget and see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
Coordinate with committees to align program budget with overall budget.
Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field to appropriately support and guide staff and board leaders, as well as to ensure appropriate communication with partners and the community.
Support a member-led board in its continual evolution by providing institutional history and context, as well as identifying strategies to fill needs as the board composition changes.
Travel as necessary around the State to meet members and MAPP Partners, recruit new members, and participate in AIA MS programming.
Travel as necessary to AIA National events such as Grassroots, AIA National Convention, and chapter executive seminars.
The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to AIA Mississippi’s mission.
All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching and relationship management experience. Demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
Experience/Interest in architecture and design culture and/or industry
CAE certification ideal but not required
Ability to point to specific examples of having developed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of architectural industry professionals
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
Special Skills Necessary:
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
Proficiency in the use of QuickBooks Pro Accounting Software
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suites - Ability to create graphics for events and announcements as needed
Ability to create registration forms to accept digital registrations
Ability to create graphics as needed to advertise events

Working knowledge of WordPress web site functions

Additional Salary Information: Compensation and Time:
AIA Mississippi will offer a salary that is competitive with industry standards and commensurate with experience. The position is full-time with 40 hours per week. Benefits include health insurance, parking, mobile phone, paid holidays, and 2 weeks’ vacation per year.
To achieve the goals of AIA MS, the Executive Director will work occasional weekends, evenings and other non-business hours to participate in events, committee meetings, board retreats and other AIA MS functions. In addition, the Executive Director will travel out of the city from time to time to attend Council of Architectural Component Executives meetings and other events and conferences.
