The Dallas office of SmithGroupJJR is currently seeking a highly talented Design Principal with a passion for the Higher Education Practice. The Design Principal will be an advocate for design excellence within the office through an integrated and collaborative approach. The Design Leader consistently exhibits and demonstrates a commitment to SmithGroupJJR’s core values – Collaboration, Creativity, Community, Integrity and the Environment.
The Design Principal will bring an award-wining and recognized portfolio of design work that helps build and further develop our Higher Education practice. The Design Principal will report directly to the Studio Leader.
Manages design team members during the implementation of design to ensure clarity and quality of concept is maintained through detail level.
Manages client interaction and decision making relative to design.
Participates in business development activities, project pursuits and interviews.
Represents the firm in design presentations at national events and outside associations.
Provides mentorship, guidance, leadership, and growth of designers within the office.
Assists in defining program requirements and establishes design parameters based on client requirements and working with the project architect, project manager, and engineers.
With Project Manager, monitors project budget and schedule.
Leads effort to collect presentation material and design stories throughout design for use in social media and marketing efforts.
Recognized, award winning design portfolio in practices noted above.
Minimum 15 years’ experience as lead architectural designer in higher education.
Must have original design work that has been built.
Professional Bachelors or Masters Degree in Architecture.
LEED® Accreditation (or must be in the process of achieving); membership in professional organizations such as AIA desirable.
Registration as a licensed architect required.
Advanced graphic and verbal presentation skills.
Must be resourceful and a strategic problem solver.
Strong commitment to design excellence and demonstrated high degree of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Strong communication skills and the ability to earn the respect of clients, team members, direct reports and others external to the firm.
Has the ability to lead an integrated design process including architects, interior designers, engineers, planners and site designers.
Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills to develop future design talent.
