Design & Development Services is the primary service provider at UC San Diego charged with strategic visioning, design direction, quality control and regulatory functions of the built environment. DDS is an independent Functional Unit within Resources Management & Planning that provides direction and guidance during the entire progression of Capital Projects from pre-concept through post occupancy.
DDS works in concert with the Capital Program Management Unit (CPM) as required to envision and deliver a +/- $3.2 Billion Capital Program transforming the built environment with expanded transit, health care, housing, academic and research buildings, and mixed-use facilities to address future enrollment growth demands aimed at ensuring enhanced student experience, expanding research prowess, and improving the delivery of advanced healthcare. The Sr. Director of Design Services is responsible to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Campus Architect, to develop strategies for management of all campus architecture, pre-design, and design matters relating to the physical development of all UC San Diego properties, ensuring compliance with design standards, codes and other governmental requirements for public health and safety.
The Sr. Director of Design Services represents the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Campus Architect in all matters related to the coordination of architectural services in DDS and CPM for the campus and Health System. Provides consultation on professional Architectural practices and opportunities having organization-wide impact to the departments, the campus, and the University of California system.
The position functions independently in directing, planning, and establishing goals of design professional and technical staff engaged in the support and delivery of major and minor capital improvement projects in pre-design phase of campus and health system Capital Program. Represents the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Campus Architect at meetings and conferences related to the Capital Improvement Program.
Responsible for budget, schedule, and quality control during pre-design phase of capital projects. Serves as the senior resource for coordination of all technical architectural functions for both new construction and renovation projects. In collaboration and consultation with Real Estate Office mission to monetize real property assets, the SDD has administrative oversight in the implementation of P3 projects in the areas of design, quality control, design review, plan review and permit issuance, and owner’s representation during course of construction of P3 projects.
This position serves as representative to the Office of the President on campus design matters at UC San Diego as well as the University representative to outside agencies, i.e., Department of State Architect (DSA), OSHPD, City of San Diego, and County of San Diego. Provides guidance in the scheduling, professional review, and direction of DDS staff.
