The Brand Experience Studio is seeking a Design Principal (DP) with a passion for high-quality design and collaborative leadership.
The Design and Studio Principal (DP and SP) relationship at Little is one of equal partnership. The Design Principal has the primary responsibilities for design innovation & thought leadership while sharing marketing & business development and staff management with the Studio Principal. Together the two Principals manage creative, implementation and managerial responsibilities.
As a Design leader, the DP is recognized by peers in the profession and clients for their ability to design remarkable retail experiences. Furthermore, the Design Principal must demonstrate an ability to lead other team members in providing design solutions of unparalleled innovation and to build and maintain highly successful relationships with key clients and industry leaders. Recognition of success should include the pursuit and receipt of design awards across the multi-disciplinary disciplines related to retail projects.
The DP and SP lead the efforts in the pursuit of new work and accounts. As a design industry leader, the DP develops industry relationships that open the possibilities to work opportunities. The two principals share in the pursuit of competition work, RFP’s and invitations with the support of the Practice leaders and Studio Principals across the retail practice.
Both lead interviews, presentations, and meetings resulting from a successful engagement.
Immersion phase: Leads the front-end research and analysis of the collected information, data; Customer, Culture, Client, and Market. Develop insights based on research, client uniqueness and unique project goals.
Strategy phase: In collaboration with a strategy leader they formulate a preliminary strategy or POV based on insights from the previous phase. They collaborate with the team in developing a hypothesis and determines how the strategy will influence the design direction of the project.
Ideation Phase: The DP develops with the design staff multiple applicable design solutions, which meet the strategic, design, functional and budgetary criteria as established by the client and our project team. The DP conceives exterior and interior environments from conceptual design (3D concept sketches) to final schematic or design development (final rendering, technical drawings/design documentation). The DP manages the creative part of the work and sets internal design reviews. The DP establishes strategic direction for space programming, fixture design, visual merchandising and FF& and coordinates brand communication strategy with internal Brand Communication and Design team.
Document Phase: The DP and design team works closely with the SP and production team leaders to ensure that all information necessary for the successful production of the design is understood and communicates with regional and international offices when needed.
Proactively stays current on customer, market and industry trends
Authors or partners with other DPs or SPs on the creation of “thought leadership” materials
Participates in the pursuit of new work, accounts and project pursuits
Collaborates with retail leadership and marketing coordinators in the development of annual topics to present at conferences and retail forums
Presents work internally and to external clients
Coordinates with outside design support/consultants contracted on projects
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in industrial design, Interior design or architecture
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in a retail/design company or similar creative role
A strong creative portfolio with a diversity of retail project types
Evidence of the integration of multidisciplinary design disciplines like, visual merchandising, environmental graphics and digital
A demonstrated ability to support design implementation teams towards the creation of design development and documentation drawings
Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
Excellent conceptual sketching and schematic drawing abilities – with strong rendering/illustration abilities
Solid understanding of materials, details and retail construction processes
Ability to communicate design intent and manage 3rd party consultants, vendors and or contractors
Mac/PC proficiency, fluent use of Microsoft Office & Adobe Creative Suite, technical drawing platforms, AutoCAD, BIM-Revit, Sketch-Up, etc.
Ability to efficiently manage project schedules and budgets
Candidate must be able to work as a creative member of a project team as a design champion and productive member of the staff in his/her discipline
Availability for travel nationally and internationally as required
