The Interior Design program at Wentworth Institute of Technology is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Department Chair. Located in the urban center of Boston, Massachusetts, with its concentration of museums and significant and historic architecture and interiors, our program graduates students with a broad overview of the profession by balancing a curriculum equally weighted in creativity and the art of design, fundamental technical knowledge, and an appreciation for the iterative design process required to realize their creative goals. Other distinctive features of the program include an opportunity for three semesters of co-operative work experience (two of which are required for graduation), and a Study Abroad program. Our department includes a full-time faculty of five (not including the Chair) consisting of interior designers, registered architects, and a fine artist / graphic designer. Supporting our full-time faculty is a group of highly skilled, indispensable adjunct instructors. The department enrolls approximately 110 students in its Bachelor of Science program. The new Chair will provide leadership and lead long-term strategic planning for the program while supervising, supporting and facilitating the work of the faculty and students. The Chair will also represent the program to both internal and external constituencies. The Department Chair is appointed by the Provost, and reports to the Dean of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction Management.
Having successfully completed a 2017 CIDA Accreditation visit where the evaluators noted ours to be “the smartest curriculum ever seen,” the department has begun reflecting on its vision and mission statements, as it continues to improve and look to new opportunities for enriching the student experience. As the department’s mission and pedagogy evolve, the incoming Chair will lead the department’s efforts to implement more / better opportunities for: interdisciplinary learning experiences, teamwork, and professional skill sets that will be valuable to our students in their careers. The incoming Chair will direct the daily operation of the program and work with the faculty members to develop and implement curriculum. Specific responsibilities include: • Proposing curriculum changes • Managing and developing the departmental budget • Assisting Human Resources to recruit and hire faculty • Recruiting adjunct faculty and guest lecturers • Assisting Admissions to help recruit students • Administering and coordinating all full-time faculty schedules and annual reviews • Assisting in various tasks related to graduation, alumni relations, marketing and communication • Assisting in the resolution of student and/or faculty issues • Advising students • Participating in College and University academic leadership activities • Advising and assisting faculty with scholarship • Reviewing transcripts of transfer students • Teaching 16 credits over two academic years • Performing other institutional duties as assigned by the Dean • Overseeing physical facilities • Overseeing accreditation reviews • Participating in annual planning for our Study Abroad program. As the program looks to the future, familiarity with professional and current trends in the industry will be vital. The department looks to the new Chair to be familiar with shared governance in higher education, work well across academic departments (including collaboration on interdisciplinary projects and curricula) and with administration, and successfully negotiate on the Department’s behalf. This position is available in May 2019.
A minimum of five years as a full-time faculty member in an established interior design program (a CIDA accredited program is preferred); a professional degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture; a Master’s or Doctoral degree; and NCIDQ certification.
