The principal function of an employee in this class is to develop building designs, conduct building design review, perform project management activities and provide technical assistance to other departments. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Facility Manager, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment with some field trips to project sites.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Works with City Departments to prioritize projects based on budget, schedule and other project constraints.
Develops concepts, designs, schedules, budgets and complete project management services for many types of civic projects undertaken by the City of Des Moines.
Participates in the development of building projects from inception to completion.
Conducts related energy efficiency analyses, identifies concerns and recommends responsive cost-effective strategies.
Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests and related information to plan and design projects.
Estimates project costs and determines project feasibility based upon analysis.
Prepares plans, estimates and specifications to develop modifications and enhancements to City facilities.
Provides design and technical direction for the planning and design of City facilities.
Monitors work to ensure compliance with plans and applicable codes and regulations.
Develops and maintains close working relationships with operations staff, enforcement agencies, City officials, and other City staff.
Conducts City of Des Moines space needs assessments and offers possible solutions.
Coordinates with contractors, consulting engineers, inspectors, utility representatives and other officials to gather and disseminate information and maintain records necessary to complete public improvement projects.
Generates correspondence and maintains files of public improvements from capital improvement cost estimates through contract final-out and as-built drawings.
Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Engineering or closely related academic field; and
Considerable experience in building design, construction, renovation or related work.
Some experience in construction management preferred.
License in the State of Iowa, as an Architect or Professional Engineer preferred.
