The School of Architecture (SoA) within the University of Utah’s College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Integrated Building Technology. This position will be a two-year appointment with the opportunity to convert to tenure-track for either Fall 2022 or Fall 2023, pending Dean approval and a faculty vote. Appointment will be 1.0 FTE and begin on July 1, 2021.
Integrated Technology Curriculum
We are highly motivated to create an inclusive school of architecture in which we collectively explore research methodologies that will give our students the ability to become critical, reflective citizens and activists in their lives and their architectural practices. In order to accomplish this goal, we have developed an integrated technology sequence that focuses on a systems approach to building technology. These courses lead to a sequence of immersive design studios integrated with technology courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Finally, both the Bachelor and Master degrees end with a capstone project in which students are asked to integrate diverse knowledge and research across architectural and interdisciplinary fields on their own.
The College of Architecture + Planning at the University of Utah seeks a visiting faculty to teach courses on integrated building technology collaborating with studio faculty at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointed faculty will conduct research and develop courses that address established and emerging systems of materials, building construction methods, structures, enclosures, building performance, and/or life cycles. This position requires a demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability and environmental justice. The applicant must demonstrate knowledge of both passive and active building systems. The candidate also should demonstrate an interest in the integration of technology research and systems with our goals of capacity building, design justice, cultural resilience and alternative approaches to technology systems in disadvantaged communities. The ability to collaborate and coordinate with studio faculty in research methods and technology-led studio offerings is necessary. Applicants will be expected to conduct research and/or creative work within a R1 university setting.
An NAAB-accredited graduate degree in Architecture (e.g., M.Arch) and/or appropriate related field.
Research/applied experience in professional practice or a PhD in building technologies. (PhD students expecting to complete their degree by the time the position starts are welcome to apply.)
Previous teaching in technology and/or studio and/or mentoring experience (with examples).
Preferred qualifications include
Peer-reviewed research and/or creative work.
Awards for teaching and/or design.
Construction experience either administration or building.

The School offers an accredited Master of Architecture degree as well as both a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Architectural Studies and graduate certificates in Urban Design and Community Engaged Practices.
