Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Facilities Division (https://facilities.lbl.gov/) has an opening for a Facilities Architect to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be matrixed to the Small Projects Team and will plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of standard architectural techniques, procedures and criteria for obtaining results.  Applies new and appropriate design approaches to all problems encountered. 

This position will be responsible to meet with research clients to ascertain scope, owner’s performance requirements, and estimate for the work they are requesting from the Small Projects Team. This position will also collaborate with Engineers, Project Managers, EHS personnel, and many other disciplines to ensure the work can be successfully accomplished and comply with building codes and standards, constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability, and life cycle cost of architectural components and systems. This position will be responsible to review subcontractors' shop drawings and submittals in parallel with the consultant architect/engineer’s review for the same subject matters.

As the assigned Facilities Division Subject Matter Expert (SME) for architectural elements (e.g., roofing systems, cladding, windows, waterproofing, etc.), ADA accessibility requirements, and technical matters related to architectural design for which the Division has oversight, the Facilities Architect will provide designs for maintenance and small projects that are designed in-house, review designs prepared by architect/engineer consultants, review construction submittals and RFIs, inspect construction, and review record drawings.  This position will be responsible to ensure uniformity of compliance with Facilities Division policies, procedures and standards.

What You Will Do:

• Direct contact with research clients to ascertain the scope of work requested of the Small Projects Team. The line of questions will include the overall objective, space requirements, equipment and utility needs, project timeline, and overall budgets.
• Perform architectural design assignments for buildings, research laboratories, and site systems and obtain reviews by Facilities Engineering and Building Code Official (BCO). 
• Ensure that construction documents prepared by Architect/Engineer consultants meet Facilities Division Standards and Specifications, including but not limited to: site plans, floor plans, exterior wall details, interior partition details, furniture layout, cabinetry designs, roof details, waterproofing, and vapor barrier designs, and accessibility requirements.
• Work with the Campus Planning group and Facility Area Managers on space planning, exterior and interior signage, selection of finish materials, accessibility accommodations, and provide all required designs for completion of the assigned projects.
• Advise project managers, facility managers, health and safety managers, outside A/E consultants, and LBNL leadership on issues and questions pertaining to compliance with accessibility codes and standards, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), University of California policy, and the California Building Code (CBC).
• Meet project time-cost-performance requirements, develop Owner's Project Requirements (OPR), formulate design criteria, and coordinate work with other disciplines and outside A&E firms.  Review Basis of Designs created by outside A&E/Registered Design Professional (RDP) from OPRs.  Resolve review comments on construction documents and project submittals.
• Conduct architectural analysis and design based on user criteria and institutional requirements.
• Provide construction inspection of architectural components for buildings, projects, and field activities to ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes, and specifications.  
• Comply with LBNL, Federal, DOE, State of California, NFPA, industry design standards, codes, regulations, orders, and directives.
• Use computer-aided drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software programs to prepare standard details, specifications, and other electronic files to satisfy project-specific requirements.  Develop standard details and maintain the CAD library of architectural standards. Maintain the architectural sections of the standard specification library.
• Participate in other related activities (e.g. troubleshooting, commissioning, records management etc.) as directed from time to time by the Facilities Engineering Manager and Lead Civil/Structural Engineer.
• Responsible owner for Engineering/Architectural Master Specs including soliciting and reviewing feedback on issues and recommendations and ensuring periodic updates are completed and communicated.

What is Required:

• Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience and a Bachelor’s degree, OR 3 years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree. 
• Registration as a Professional Architect in the State of California.
• Hands-on experience of computer-aided drafting software with knowledge of AutoCAD, 
• Proficiency with software applications related to architectural and design tasks, database management, cost estimating, and project scheduling.
• Proven experience working with internal and external contacts with the demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines. 
• Must have relevant experience in the architectural design of office buildings, research laboratories, cafeterias, conference centers, and site systems. 
• Must have relevant architectural design experience in preparing construction documents (drawings and specifications) for projects involving architectural systems.  
• Must have excellent communications skills (written and oral) in working with research clients to determine space requirements, equipment needs, power, and anything else in order to scope out projects and prepare cost estimates.
• Must possess a thorough knowledge of:

   ? Architectural design principles related but not limited to floor plan layouts, ceilings, restrooms, finishes, exterior walls, furniture and furnishing layouts, and accessibility features such as door operators, signage, elevator panel layouts, restroom accessories, furniture, the path of travel, and Universal Design.

   ? Applicable architectural construction methods and materials for facilities constructability.

   ? Current industry and regulatory standards, California Building Code (CBC), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), University of California policy, and other design standards and environmental regulations that are pertinent to the architectural discipline.

• Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks to achieve defined group and institutional goals. Must be flexible to work weekends and holidays in accordance with the planned work schedule.  
• Skillful in negotiations, coordination and conflict management. Must be willing to partner with colleagues and project stakeholders to resolve issues in creative and effective ways.

Desired Qualifications:

• California Access Specialist (CASp) certification

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
