Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Under the supervision of Engineer V (Deputy Director of the Building Division), reviews plans and specifications of commercial, multi-family, single family and miscellaneous structures for compliance with Virginia Statewide Building Code (USBC), the Fairfax County Code and Land Development Services (LDS) policies. Communicates construction regulations to contractors, developers, builders, engineers, homeowners, citizens and other governmental agencies. Analyzes building systems and/or components using engineering principles and calculations to determine compliance with related codes and regulations. Complies with LDS's safety program and guidelines. Complies with county, agency and job specific training requirements, including but not limited to Emergency Management and Safety related courses.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field. Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class may require specific certification(s) prior to employment and/or the ability to acquire necessary certification(s) within a specified time period following employment. The certifications are identified in the position description and employment advertisement.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license
VDHCD Commercial Building Plans Examiner (Required within 18 months)
VDHCD Commercial Building Inspector (Required within 36 months)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five or more years of experience enforcing the building code
Five or more years of experience as a Commercial Building Plans Examiner
Certification as a Commercial Building Plans Examiner
Certification as an Accessibility Plans Examiner
Prior experience in code development and research
Possess a valid Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license from the Commonwealth of Virginia or similar registration from another state
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to operate key-board driven equipment and use large platform monitors to review plans. Sufficient mobility to perform on-site building inspections. Ability to lift plans up to 50 lbs. Ability to perform sedentary tasks. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
