Description
ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE The Pratt Institute School of Architecture (SoA) educates future leaders in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, urban and community planning, construction management, real estate practice, environmental management, historic preservation, and urban placemaking. We see the design, planning, and management of the built environment as tools for addressing the critical issues of our time—including social justice and the climate crisis. Students at the Pratt SoA build the skills and knowledge needed to respond to these complex and evolving challenges in a uniquely versatile, innovative, and ethical way in an environment of disciplinary, intellectual, and cultural diversity. Position Summary The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, an internationally recognized school, seeks a dynamic and visionary leader with outstanding communication, listening, and organizational skills who will build upon the strengths of the existing programs to serve as Chairperson for the Graduate Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design (GA/LA/UD) department.
The GA/LA/UD department is made up of two first-professional programs: Master of Architecture (M.Arch) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and two post-professional Masters of Science programs in Architecture (M.S.Arch) and in Urban Design (M.S.UD). All the programs that make up the GA/LA/UD are dedicated to pursuing design inquiry across complex and evolving fields of study. Our goal is to cultivate our students' ability to ask challenging questions that deepen their understanding of building and living environments. Together, the department works across design practices, professions, and disciplines to meet the challenges and opportunities of our times. With more than 50 full and part-time faculty members, the department serves a student body of approximately 200 students.
The GA/LA/UD Chairperson will report directly to the Dean of the School of Architecture and is expected to provide academic and administrative leadership of the program. The Chairperson will also be expected to manage a diverse group of faculty and students and develop a curriculum for departments dedicated to the principles of sustainability, equity, and public participation. This administrative appointment, scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, carries a twelve-month per year workload and a three-year contract that may be renewed.
